It took close to four years to get it completed, but just before my family headed to the states for Winter Break I got the email below. It just might have been the best Christmas present ever. We’re now working on the next steps of actually getting our schools communicating with one another. ___________________________________________________ HelloContinue reading “Connected”

The story of a grant that connected a middle school in Greensboro, NC to a school in Tema, Ghana. Also, the beginnings of my journey to international teaching.
Thanksgiving
I’m pleased to report that things are going well at CESC. Vodaphone hasn’t made the final connection yet, but everything else is in place. Hopefully in the next few weeks they will have their internet up and running. Robyn and I took our son, Maddox, to visit the school Thursday and deliver some books andContinue reading “Thanksgiving”
Great News
All kinds of good things have been happening with this project lately. Hardware for internet access has finally been installed thanks to the guys at I.T. Foundation Ghana. They have been really cool, supportive and eager to help. It seems like they have a good program and I’m hoping to get to talk to themContinue reading “Great News”
Progress
I’m very excited to report that we are once again making progress. Thanks to Robyn and the CAS program at Lincoln Community School, a group of 4th graders will be visiting Community Eleven tomorrow! Robyn and I both will be visiting with them. I’ll only be able to visit for the morning, but the studentsContinue reading “Progress”
Empty Bowls
Monday, May 13 the art department of Mendenhall Middle School hosted an Empty Bowls fundraiser to support our project. The event raised over $600 for our project.Continue reading “Empty Bowls”
Waiting
It’s been over a month since our trip now and I feel like I’m just waiting. It can be quite frustrating at times. There was a landmark event filled with emotions and potential. The return home and so much to share with friends and my students. And then, nothing. For a long time. Part of thatContinue reading “Waiting”
Reflecting
I’ve been processing the entire experience of our visit since we returned. I find my mind constantly wandering back to Community Eleven, sitting on the bench under the tree in the middle of campus. There was a sense of peace among the controlled chaos that is a school of one thousand students moving about, excitedContinue reading “Reflecting”
Update 12.17.12
Just a quick note, because I’m thinking about it. I got to talk to Mr. Atta Friday. He’s still in Tema. He says that they have managed to put together a committee to work on building a wall around CESC. As we sat and talked about the things that they felt they needed the most,Continue reading “Update 12.17.12”
Day Two at CESC
Our time in Ghana was so packed, I didn’t get to update this as I had planned. Over the next couple of days I hope to catch up a bit. We headed back to Tema and Community Eleven on Tuesday to meet with the faculty and visit some of the classrooms. We were in forContinue reading “Day Two at CESC”
A first visit to Community Eleven
What a day! I finally got to visit Community Eleven Complex School today. We met Mr. Atta at his home in Tema this morning before heading over to the school. I had no idea what was ahead of us for the day. Atta had continued to call this a “meeting”, but hinted that there wouldContinue reading “A first visit to Community Eleven”
